How the Fence Cost Calculator Works
Enter your total fence length in linear feet, select a material, and choose your fence height. The calculator estimates material costs using per-linear-foot pricing for each material, adjusted by height. It also adds labor estimates and gate costs to give you a complete project range.
The result shows two lines: Materials only (DIY) for homeowners doing the work themselves, and Installed which includes professional labor at $10–$35 per linear foot. Gate costs are added on top at $300 per walk gate and $750 per drive/double gate.
What Affects Fence Cost?
- Material type:
- The biggest cost driver. Vinyl and composite cost more per foot than wood, but require less maintenance over time.
- Fence height:
- Taller fences use more material. A 4 ft fence costs roughly 30% less than a standard 6 ft fence, while an 8 ft fence costs about 40% more.
- Terrain:
- Sloped, rocky, or heavily wooded lots require more labor. Stepped panels on hillsides can add 20–50% to installation cost.
- Gates:
- Each gate adds hardware and framing cost. Walk gates average $200–$400 and drive gates $500–$1,000 depending on material and width.
- Labor:
- Professional installation runs $10–$35 per linear foot depending on material complexity, soil conditions, and local labor rates.
