Chain link fences are durable and affordable, but they offer zero privacy. The good news: you can add privacy to an existing chain link fence for $1–$8 per linear foot — far cheaper than replacing it with a wood or vinyl fence.

The four main options for chain link privacy are slat inserts (weave through the diamond mesh for a permanent, solid look), mesh privacy screens (heavy-duty fabric that attaches to the outside of the fence), fence tape or weave (thin strips that thread through the chain link), and hedge slats (green inserts that simulate a living hedge).

Privacy slats are the most popular and durable option. They come in PVC or aluminum, in heights from 4 to 8 feet. Installation is simple — slide each slat vertically through the chain link diamonds until they lock in place. A 50-foot section takes 1–2 hours. Slats provide 85–95% privacy depending on the style.

Mesh privacy screens are the fastest to install. Unroll the screen along the fence and secure with zip ties every 12–18 inches. Mesh screens come in various opacity levels: 70% (light privacy), 85% (standard), and 90%+ (near-complete privacy). They also reduce wind and block UV.

For a natural look, reed or bamboo roll screens attach to chain link with wire ties. They provide moderate privacy (70–80%) and add a tropical, garden-like aesthetic. They're less durable than synthetic options (2–5 year lifespan vs. 5–10 years for slats and mesh).

When choosing a chain link privacy solution, consider your HOA rules — some restrict fence modifications. Also check that the added wind load won't damage the fence; older or weakened chain link may need post reinforcement before adding a full privacy screen.
